← Back to Shangri-LaTamarian Tibetan Restaurant
Long-standing Tibetan restaurant in Dukezong Old Town serving yak meat dishes, butter tea, and tsampa (roasted barley flour). Warm interior with low lighting; a reliable choice for first-time Tibetan food.
Turquoise Cloud Restaurant
Higher-end Tibetan-Yunnanese fusion restaurant in a converted Tibetan house. Known for yak steak and matsutake mushroom dishes in season (June-October). Garden seating in summer.
Dakong Tibetan Kitchen
Casual family-run Tibetan kitchen with authentic home-cooked dishes and friendly English-speaking owner (Nam, trained as a guide). A good value option for travelers wanting to try multiple Tibetan dishes without ordering hot pot.
Silent River Cafe
Foreign-owned Tibetan courtyard cafe serving proper espresso, Western breakfasts (until 11:00), and Tibetan lunch options. The best place in town to get a proper coffee and reliable Wi-Fi for video calls. Owner is responsive to dietary restrictions.
Yak Butter Tea House (traditional)
Authentic working-class Tibetan tea house with no English menu and minimal signage — most tourists don't find it. Local Tibetan families come here for breakfast (po cha, tsampa, yak cheese). Prices are honest, atmosphere is genuine.
Yun Roast House (lamb skewers)
Open-air barbecue joint with great lamb skewers (yang rou chuan) and grilled mushrooms. Locals' favorite for evening drinking. The cumin-spiced lamb ribs are the standout. No menu in English — picture menu on the wall.
Shangri-La Kitchen (hotel restaurant)
Upscale hotel restaurant in Shangri-La Old Town serving refined Yunnanese dishes with strong wine list. Popular for special occasions; the truffle-oil infused yak steak and the matsutake chicken soup are signature. Reservations recommended weekends.
Lhasa Noodle Shop
Cheap, fast Tibetan noodle shop across from the old town bus station. Locals' lunch spot. The thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup) and the hand-pulled beef noodle bowl are both excellent at ¥25. No English menu.
Snow Mountain Cafe (rooftop)
Rooftop cafe on a renovated Tibetan house with views over Dukezong Old Town and toward Foping Mountain. Better for coffee and sunset than for full meals — but the yak butter latte is unique.
Napa Grassland Whole Lamb Grill
Tibetan grassland-style whole lamb roast experience in a Napa Lake grassland tent. You get a whole roasted lamb, tsampa, butter tea, and Tibetan dance performance. Per-person pricing if you don't have 8+ guests is not offered — bring a group or join one. Best with travelers you've met at your guesthouse.
Rajore Cafe & Bakery
Foreign-run bakery serving real sourdough bread, proper croissants, and espresso. Excellent cinnamon rolls and almond croissants. Small seating area, mostly takeaway. Open early (07:30) — best breakfast in town for Western travelers.
Old Tibetan Kitchen
Small family-run Tibetan restaurant near Songzanlin Monastery serving the kind of food monks actually eat — simpler, saltier, more authentic than the old town options. Specializes in butter tea (the proper salty kind) and yak meat stew.
