The Big Change: Foreign Cards Work

As of late 2024, both Alipay and WeChat Pay accept international Visa, Mastercard, and other foreign credit cards directly. Setup takes about 5 minutes.

Setting Up Alipay

Download Alipay from your app store

Tap "Tour Card" or international version

Add your credit/debit card

Verify with passport scan

Set a 6-digit payment PIN

You can now pay at:

Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart)

WeChat Pay works similarly:

Install WeChat (the messaging app)

Open "Me → Services → Wallet"

Add a foreign card

Complete identity verification with passport

When Mobile Payments Don't Work

Always carry some cash as backup:

500-1000 CNY is enough for emergencies

Use Bank of China, ICBC, or HSBC ATMs

Avoid independent ATMs with high fees

Tax Refund for Tourists

When shopping over 500 CNY at participating stores, ask for a tax refund form. At the airport, present forms, receipts, and goods at the tax refund counter before departure.
